Father John J. Looby Year for Priests Page

Ordination:May, 28.1966
Current assignment: Pastor,
St.Edmund's, Ellenburg

1.) What's your favorite prayer?
Psalm 91

2.) Favorite saint?
Lawrence

3.) A holy moment in your priesthood:
Every day at Mass

4.) Something you've learned from your brother priests (or a particular priest):
Not to be scrupulous
(which is not the same as
being unscrupulous!)

5.) Favorite part of being a priest:
Celebrating Mass

6.) Advice for young people considering a vocation
I once told a college professor
who asked what an
average day was like in the
diocesan priesthood, "I usually
get most of my work
done by being interrupted
from what I had planned to
do."
He thought that was marvelous,
since his days were
more routine.
But I do like it that every
day is different.

7.) Something about you that few people would know:
This year I studied
Esperanto on the internet.
Had I started language studies
years ago with Esperanto
I wouldn't have had as hard a
time with French, Latin,
Greek and Spanish.

8.) Favorite temporal (nonchurchy) things:
Swimming, languages,
walking, traveling, computers
and painting.

9.) Favorite food:
Corvina a la minière, Papas
a la huancaina, Lomo
saltado, Rocotos rellenos and
Palta a la jardinera, all Peruvian
dishes, some of which I
make now myself. There are
recipes on the internet for
them. Also I like Chinese,
Mexican, Thai, Lebanese and
others. In traveling, I've
found the meals in Italy are
unsurpassable. Portuguese
Caldo verde with chorizo is a
favorite. Also peanut butter
sandwiches.
