Honoring Catholic Sisters

March 8, 2023

By Sister Mary Eamon Lyng, SSJ
Diocesan Vocations Coordinator

Catholic Sisters Week is celebrated every March 8 through 14.

This week is a celebration that began in March 2014 during Women’s History Month to honor religious Catholic women and remember Catholic sisters who have passed away.

The week focuses on how the light of Christ shines on the spirituality, mission and community building of women religious.

The Diocese of Ogdensburg has been blessed with many religious communities that have provided Catholic education to the students in Catholic schools, religious education programs, adult faith formation and permanent deacon formation.

They have reached out in the diocese who continually stand with the poor and immigrants, fight injustice, visit the sick, pray with them, share spirituality, empower women to serve, defend the planet, promote peace and justice, create community, offer hope and more.

During this special week of March 8-14, there is a role that individuals, organizations, parishes, schools, religious education programs can in some way honor a particular sister or religious community for their work. Honor the sister or community by attending a parish or school event, supporting a congregation’s work with a collection or donation, offering prayers or sending a thank you card for their service.

Catholic sisters bring abundant hope to our Church and the world, especially to the Diocese of Ogdensburg.
