Archives Funeral Mass celebrated for Sister Jane Mennis

A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Jane Mennis, an Ursuline Sister, was celebrated on Jan. 17 at the Ursuline Province Center in New Rochelle, New York.

Sister Jane (born Mary Andrew), died peacefully at Andrus on Hudson, Hastings on Hudson, on January 10, 2024. She was 94.

Born in New York in 1930, she was the daughter of Evelyn and James Mennis. In 1952, Jane entered the Ursuline community after completing her studies at the College of New Rochelle.

Sister Jane had a long and varied ministry. She was a faculty member of Ursuline schools in Bethesda, Maryland, Malone, New York, New Rochelle, NY; Bronx, New York, and Athens, Greece.

She eventually became a director of Religious Education in the Bronx and a Pastoral Associate in Witherbee and Chateaugay, New York.

As a sociology major, Sister Jane deeply desired to help people in need. She volunteered at Moriah Shock State Prison in Mineville, New York, and Bare Hill Correctional Facility in Malone. She also volunteered at the Children’s Center of Bedford Hills Correctional Facility.

Sister Jane had a life-long love of learning, as evidenced by her attendance at workshops and courses in her field throughout her life.

She is survived by her brother, John, and her sister, Sister Dorothy Mennis, RC. Her parents, Evelyn and James, predeceased her.
