We’re making history

“It’s a shame you weren’t able to find a career that uses your degree.”

I’ve heard versions of that phrase at least a few times in my life.

My degree is in History & Government with a major in English. While I understand why others may not see the connection, I couldn’t disagree more with that statement.

When I was attending Daemen College, now Daemen University, more than 20 years ago, History & Government majors were required to take a course called “Historical Methods.” The course was focused on conducting research using primary sources, especially archived documents.

Of all the research we did in the class, only two types of documents were interesting enough for me to remember all these years later – census records and newspapers.

Making a newspaper is making a historical record. We’re making history here!

But we’re also making more than that.

Our North Country Catholic is Celebrating 80 Years of Sharing Faith this year.

In addition to 80 years of records about how Catholics were and are living their faith here in our diocese, that’s 80 years of sharing Christ. It’s 80 years of connecting to one another through stories. It’s 80 years of hearing from our bishops, our spiritual fathers. It’s 80 years of information about the global Church and her leaders.

That seems worth celebrating!

I’d also like to take this opportunity to celebrate Christine Ward, the newspaper’s longtime editorial assistant. While her name and photo aren’t on the same page every week, her work is on nearly every page. Christine offers support with advertising, photo editing, obituaries, the weekly calendar… She also ensures the paper gets to your homes each week by managing subscriptions. While she has an abundance of talent and skills, her kindness, dedication and love of Christ are even bigger.

Thank you, also, to all the writers and photographers who contribute to these pages. While the group includes some very different personalities, they’re united by their love of Jesus and His Church, and they’re gifts to this newspaper.

Thank you for joining us in this celebration. Thank you for journeying with us as we all try to follow Christ to life eternal with him. Thank you for inviting this newspaper into your churches, homes and lives.

I don’t need a degree to know how special it is to celebrate 80 years of the NCC!
