September 9, 2026 I gave God the blame and gave myself the credit. Over the last handful of years, I’ve experienced major life changes, health issues and the need to overcome some significant habitual sins that were negatively impacting my life and my efforts to be the person God calls me to be. I recall times – lots and lots of times – when I blamed God for what I was experiencing. I cried out in despair, asking God, “why is this happening to me?” or “why did you give me this cross to carry?” Similarly, I remember begging God to heal me. While it wasn’t the immediate, miraculous healing I wanted, I was able to make significant progress in my battles against those sins, wounds and struggles through time, medical assistance, therapies and programs, and by encountering the right people and opportunities and developing new skills. It occurred to me recently that when I talk or think about those battles, I give myself the credit for getting through them and overcoming them. It’s easy for me to talk about the hours and hours of work I did, the tough decisions I made and the resilience and willpower I displayed. It occurred to me that I gave God the blame and gave myself the credit. I think God is showing me that pride is the major habitual sin I still battle. I think God called me to spend some time trying to view the last few years through a specific lens – the lens that shows me the amazing ways He controlled it all. I’ve been reflecting on the things I did and the decisions I made that contributed to my struggles. I’ve been reflecting on how God led me to healing by putting the right people – the medical providers, therapists, friends, family members, mentors and supports – in my life. I’ve been reflecting on the opportunities God put in my path and the fact that He made me ready to seize them when I wasn’t ready the numerous times He presented them in the past. I’ve been reflecting on the fortitude and hope God gave me when I was feeling pretty powerless and hopeless. I’ve been working on giving God the praise and credit and checking my pride. |
